Introduction to Health Sciences

The vast career opportunities in the health care field will be introduced to the student. Employment requirements, job shadowing and career exploration activities will allow the student to make an informed decision. Medical terminology/abbreviations, communication skills, general safety/wellness practices (first aid, CPR, and AED) and basic health care skills will provide the ground work for future health service-related classes.  Students will be exposed to the health career of interest to them in the community.

Health Sciences Assistant I

(Taken concurrently with Human Body 1 and Medical Terminology or Pharmacology)  Classroom, laboratory and clinical time will expose students to exciting career opportunities in the health care field. Students will study introduction to microbes and disease, overview of body maintenance, interpersonal and health care team relationships, communication and preparation for employment. Certified nurse assistant skills will be presented and the student has the opportunity to complete the requirements for certification.  Students will be certified in CPR, First Aid and AED.  Students will participate in a hospital/community/nursing home rotation of interest to them.

Health Sciences Assistant II

(Taken concurrently with Human Body II and Medical Terminology or Pharmacology)  This cooperative education program is divided into two parts of sequential instruction. The classroom/laboratory instruction will provide the student with basic skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for employment in health service fields. The student may become employed in a health care field and have release time from school.
